Closing Time

Hello out there in Blog land! There is of course too much to say and not enough of words or time to say it in. As the CYMA program comes to an end, there is a lot to miss, a lot to cherish, and a lot to look forward too. I can’t believe eight weeks have passed by and the 2007 CYMA program will come to an end. It feels like just yesterday we started the publicity to kick this year off and our first interns started to show interest. However, tomorrow at 8am the buss will roll back to the airport and 18 of the greatest people to have interned in Armenia will fly back to their homes and daily lives forever touched by their homeland.

When I talk to these interns I am solely impressed with not only their understanding of Armenia, but of how much knowledge was really accumulated. There is no doubt they experienced Armenia and Artsakh in a completely different light than most ever have. Between CYMA events, CYMA combined with Birthright Events, interaction with family and locals, there was a completely different vibe to this year’s experience. I find myself having conversations about the economy, transition, development, and Armenia’s future that are well articulated, well thought out, and communicated like a true professional. I know some of these interns have something very special in store for them as they continue their education and start their careers, and I know their path now includes a spot for Armenia. A lot has been experienced on this trip, but also a lot has been learned on this trip, and I’m fully confident that this journey wasn’t just another trip or internship, but a full rite of passage.

So, to all of the grandparents, parents, siblings and friends that are reading this blog…be ready! Your sons and daughters have a passionate view of Armenia, Artsakh, the diaspora, Christianity and the Armenian Church…. and they still have a lot of work to do to complete their CYMA mission. As they come home they are going to share what happened here and tell you all about their unique experience, what they saw, what they heard, and what they felt. It will be a unique time, a special time, and I am looking forward to seeing what they all accomplish when they arrive back home and re-enter their daily lives. As we have always called it here: Bridge the Gap… and now let it began!

I won’t be on their same flight home, but I know that a lot of people will. I am, in a way, extremely jealous that I won’t be there to see participate in their homecoming. It will be a great time for all, a special time, and of course an emotional time. To all the interns and parents, families and friends, have a safe journey all around. With CYMA, we never say goodbye, just, see you soon. And, I will see you soon, at the CYMA closing party on September 9 at the Eyvazian’s home in Carlsbad. I can’t wait. Pari Janabar!
