Fortune
August 11th- Fortune
A few weeks ago, Haig performed a surgery on a patient with a torn ACL. It was 4 hours of the most interesting and complicated work I have seen in the last 2 months. This guy was a futbol player from Nigeria and the minute he walked through the door, all the doctors stopped what they were doing to speak with him… as if they had never seen an African American before. A few days after the surgery, Adrianne and I found his room and stopped by to see how he was doing. That was the beginning of my favorite 2 weeks at the hospital. We learned his life story. He was born in New York, eventually moving to Nigeria when he was 8 to start soccer and then traveling around the world to play for different teams (Lebanon, Vietnam, London). He was visiting Armenia one summer to considering trading to our team and met a group of Armenian girls from Bulgaria, one of which turns out to be his current wife. He lives here in Yerevan and has a beautiful 3 year old daughter and a newborn girl. He and his daughter both speak perfect Armenian.
He tore his ACL in Vietnam and decided to get the surgery done in Armenia since he was living here a few months after his injury. The doctors say he wont walk for another month and definitely wont play soccer for at least another 6 months. The idea of not playing soccer scares him to death, but he knew it was something he had to do, and he came to the conclusion that Soorp Nerses Medz was the place to do it. This guy is one of the coolest guys i have ever met. He is always in a good mood, and when his daughter visits him, he is the happiest man on earth. He loves his family so much. He plans to be back on the futbol field soon and his dream is to one day play for Chelsea in England. Having this guy as a patient in the hospital made me love waking up in the morning. I will miss the massive smile on his face everytime we walk into the room as he yells ” Ahh Superman, whas up bro??”. I cant wait for him to be on Chelsea so I can see him on TV. I plan on visiting him again sometime, whatever country he may flee to. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, his name is Fortune.
