CYMA’s first annual dinner dance extravaganza a success
The Christian Youth Mission to Armenia held its first annual dinner dance extravaganza on November 30 at the Long Beach Hyatt. With a crowd of approximately 180 guests, consisting of ACYO members, supportive parents, and dedicated donors, the event was a success.
A short program was presented; CYMA Advisor Matthew Ash and Chairman David Yaldezian introduced CYMA alumnus Armine Semerdjian, who gave a touching speech about her moving experience in Armenia as a pilgrim in 2007. Although she had visited the country once before, her experience with CYMA was life changing because of her interaction with local Armenians and visits to holy landmarks. She strongly encouraged the youth to apply for CYMA to attend the 2008 mission.
His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese, officiated the event, despite having just returned from a four-day trip to Armenia. He addressed the audience by encouraging the youth to continue the search for their identity by visiting Armenia. He then presented the CYMA Committee with hand carved wooden crosses as a symbol of thanks for the wonderful event. After a pleasurable dinner and program, guests skipped to the dance floor while Khachig and his band sang and played traditional Armenian music.
Over $2,000 was raised through raffle tickets; prizes including an Ipod, jewelry, and a weekend getaway were raffled off to participants. CYMA is still working to raise their goal of $4,000 in donations, at which point a CYMA scholarship for the 2008 journey will be awarded to a member of the youth.
